Crusader Castles

Chastel Blanc (Safitha):
Templar castle in county of Tripoli, created contemporaneously with Gaza, and built in the Nusain Mountains. Keep set high on mound, protected by oval perimeter wall; keep rebuilt twice (1170 & 1202) following earthquakes and two floors. All tithes went to Templars. Chapel dedicated to the Archangel, built into formidable keep on ground floor after restoration (1202).

Held out after defeat at Hattin (July 1187) and siege by Saladin (July 1188). Under Emperor Frederick II, forbidden to reinforce, make improvements or provide support (1228). Fell to Baybars (1271) - key to control of Tripoli.

"For my part, I adhere to the maxim of antiquity: The throne is a glorious sepulchre."
